Whether you work in a warehouse, manufacturing or out in the field and are dependent on your rugged mobile computer – you need a device that has protection from certain elements that a consumer grade mobile computer just does not have. IP (Ingress Protection) ratings are used and followed internationally using a set of standard guidelines composed of a simple two-number system that rates solid particles and liquids separately. IP ratings can tell you just how well your devices are protected against these elements and if it is rugged enough for your industry.
The two digits in an IP rating represent different forms of environmental influence:
- The first digit represents protection against ingress of solid objects. Scale goes from 0-6 with 6 being completely sealed from dust. That’s not to say that it is impossible for dust to get into the device, just not in an amount sufficient to cause damage.
- The second digit represents protection against ingress of liquids, specifically water. Scale goes from 0-8 Testing ranges from just dripping water onto the
device, to spraying it with pressurized water, to completely submerging it. (IP rating does not refer to chemicals, as many are corrosive and could potentially damage any seal that a device has, negating the resistance of the device and its IP rating.)
The larger the value of each digit, the greater the protection. ie: a product rated IP68 would be better protected against environmental factors than one rated IP57. See chart below to determine what rating you need.
